About the role
Leading a dedicated team of wardens and volunteers, you’ll make sure everything runs smoothly at this special place. You’ll help us achieve the perfect balance between access, conservation, presentation and interpretation, always bringing it back to our overriding vision of enjoyable visitor experiences. Caring for a wonderful span of cliffs, beaches and woodland areas, you’ll develop and drive projects that work in line with our overriding strategic plan and individual property plan. As you manage substantial budgets, and consider new ways to generate income, you’ll be working at the heart of our ambitious aim that by 2020, everyone will feel part of the National Trust. And encouraging local residents, authorities and businesses to get involved will be vital to this.
About you
You’ll have plenty of experience and a qualification in countryside management. In your time, you’ve managed teams, budgets and projects seamlessly – with an entrepreneurial spirit and unwavering customer focus. You’re aware of the bigger, commercial picture while always being there for your team. Comfortable communicating with people at varying levels, and presenting your ideas to them, your enthusiasm and management skills will inspire staff, volunteers, visitors, and the local community alike. You’ll also need competent computer skills and a full driving licence.

Fisheries Scientist

APEM is seeking a high calibre and motivated fisheries scientist to join our growing fisheries engineering team to be located in our head office in Stockport.

We are seeking applicants at Consultant or Senior Consultant grades who are appropriately qualified with specialist fisheries science knowledge and skills to assist with the management and technical consultancy of projects in the area of fisheries engineering. APEM’s fisheries engineering team are currently investigating fish entrainment/impingement, intake screening, cooling water, hydropower assessment including fish injury, turbine modelling and fish passage. Our current fisheries engineering project portfolio spans fresh, transitional and coastal waters from large estuarine energy projects to freshwater potable intakes. Fisheries scientists with either freshwater or marine experience will therefore be considered for the role. Applicants will have a strong fisheries science background with demonstrable experience of its application to the fisheries engineering sector for the senior grade or a willingness to learn for the consultant grade. Applicants with proven experience in fisheries science and one of our specialist fisheries engineering areas as detailed above will be preferred for the senior grade.

Depending on the grade applied for we would anticipate candidates to have a minimum of an MSc or PhD or the equivalent professional experience, and in excess of 2 years relevant fisheries experience. Excellent report writing skills are essential for this role and experience of dealing with corporate sector clients is preferred. You will be required to work independently as well as with project teams drawn from our four regional offices. Thus the ability to communicate effectively and a sense of pride in and responsibility for your work is paramount. At the senior consultant grade you should be familiar with key individuals in the fisheries engineering field and have a track record of working with corporate sector clients at the highest level. A proven ability to organise work schedules, to meet tight deadlines and to deliver projects within budget will be essential for achieving success in the senior consultant grade role. The position is primarily office-based although site visits, fieldwork and client meetings will be required and a full driving licence is therefore essential.

Coastal Policy Specialist    £19-25,000 pa depending on skills and experience


CoastNet are engaged in a number of exciting policy initiatives and we need an experienced policy officer to work alongside our Strategic Director, Alex Midlen. Briefly the successful post-holder will be engaged on the EU-funded IMCORE project (www.imcore.eu), will work with local communities, local authorities and government and its agencies on flood and coastal erosion risk management and adaptation to climate change policy, and more generally support CoastNet’s work to raise the profile of the coast in the new coalition government. KENT & ESSEX SEA FISHERIES COMMITTEE

ASSISTANT CHIEF FISHERY OFFICER


Salary Scale KR11 £35,725 to £41,112

This post is offered on a 2 year contract

This is an opportunity to join a small team during a period of transition from Sea Fisheries Committee to Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority (IFCA).  This change will take place under the provisions of the Marine and Coastal Access Act 2009 which will result in a significant increase in duties as well as organisational changes.

The successful applicant will assist in future planning and preparation to meet specified duties and deadlines of the new IFCA.  Creation of the new Authority is due to commence in October 2010 and be fully implemented in April 2011.  Additional main duties will be to assist in implementing instructions from the new Authority and take on specific responsibilities that are identified during the set-up process.

Routine duties will include participation in the day to day running of the Authority, coordination of enforcement operations, training, report writing, attendance at meetings and occasional crewing of the Committee’s Patrol Vessel.

Applicants must be educated to degree level or equivalent, have experience with an enforcement organisation at both operational and managerial level and have a working knowledge of marine environmental and fisheries issues.

A 6 month probation period applies to this post.

Marine Macroinvertebrate Taxonomist

We are currently looking for a marine macroinvertebrate taxonomist to join our busy environmental monitoring team.  ERT’s taxonomists specialise in macrobenthic identification and have a depth of experience from coastal and estuarine waters around the UK and internationally.  The laboratory also has extensive experience in processing samples from deep water environments such as the Atlantic Margin, Angola and the South China Sea.

The primary role will be to undertake taxonomic identification of benthic samples from around the UK and international waters together with the training of other laboratory staff in basic and advanced benthic taxonomy.  Other key responsibilities include participation in AQC schemes, compilation of data for statistical processing and assisting in the interpretation and evaluation of data for report production.  Although the post will primarily be laboratory based, the position also gives the opportunity to support ERT’s marine and coastal survey team.
 
The successful candidate should be educated to at least degree level in marine biology or a related discipline, self motivated and capable of working to tight deadlines.  The candidate should also ideally have at least two years experience in marine invertebrate analysis and demonstrate excellent taxonomic identification skills.  Experience in statistical analysis, report writing and fieldwork would be advantageous.
