MOLECULAR PLANKTON TAXONOMIST (POST-DOCTORAL)

SAHFOS wishes to further develop as an international Centre of Excellence in Plankton Taxonomy. The next phase involves harnessing molecular skills to assess plankton that cannot be analysed by conventional microscopic analysis in CPR samples. This Molecular Plankton Taxonomist post represents an exciting new development, initially for 2 years, to establish the approach and then made open-ended subject to meeting key performance criteria.
Job Purpose
The purpose of this post is to:
• Develop molecular procedures for the taxonomic analysis of key plankton including specifically the analysis of harmful algal bloom species or other key groups found in European and other waters.
• Apply these procedures to current and past samples obtained from the Continuous Plankton Recorder Survey.
• Advise the Database Manager to molecular data holding in the CPR database.
• Publish the results in the open scientific literature.
• Generate funding where possible to develop plankton molecular taxonomy.
• Work alongside molecular biologists in the Marine Biological Association (MBA) who are co-located with SAHFOS.
• Interact with research and other staff operating the CPR Survey and with other molecular biologists in the Plymouth Marine Sciences Partnership (www.pmsp.org.uk).

CALL FOR PROJECT IDEAS, AS THE COUNTRYSIDE COUNCIL FOR WALES OPENS ITS DOOR FOR GRANT APPLICATIONS

The Countryside Council for Wales today (Monday, 14th Sept) opens its grant application window for project ideas from groups and organisations across Wales.

CCW will be providing grants worth £6m to support work carried out by partner organisations in 2010-2011. These partners include Local Authorities as well as voluntary bodies and community groups. Martin Parkinson, CCW’s Grants Policy and Strategy Officer said: “Over the years, CCW has grant aided some excellent project that have benefited Wales environment as well as creating opportunities for people to enjoy our natural heritage. We are hoping for further innovative ideas this year.”

In addition to its current grant programme, this year CCW’s ambition is to fund more projects that support learning outside the classroom, in the natural environment. These projects should create enjoyable, high quality learning opportunities and recreational experiences for children and young people within the formal education sector.CCW is also keen to continue to receive grant applications from groups and organisations for project areas that it has funded over the years. These could vary from creating access opportunities to monitoring wildlife; and from producing information that help people understand and enjoy their environment to working with others to look after important geological sites.

Roger Thomas, CCW’s Chief Executive said: “ In 2010/ 11 we will be putting £6m into our grants budget and, together with our partners, we will make sure that this money makes a real difference. To protect and promote the MFA’s work and reputation primarily (but not solely) through proactive media management and reactive media handling - nationally and regionally.
5. Senior Fisheries Officers
Ensure compliance with the Common Fisheries Policy and other marine legislation. Responsible for the day-to-day management and planning of staff and resources within their regional geographic area. Working closely with the industry, carrying out inspections, collecting data and information and giving advice and guidance.
6. Fishing Activity Database Administrator
Responsible for supporting the work of the MFA’s Fleet Management team in matters concerning fisheries and the marine environment.

Dredging International NV Branch UK (DI Br UK) is a subsidiary of the 3,600 strong Dredging Environmental and Marine Engineering (DEME) group ( www.deme.be ). DI Br UK undertakes all aspects of dredging and reclamation work throughout the United Kingdom; the environment is integral to this work.
Your work will start with the major infrastructure project that is building a new Port on the banks of the Thames in Essex over the next five years. Environmental science will be applied to manage the dredging and reclamation operations and deliver environmental mitigation measures, utilising comprehensive environmental monitoring in the estuary and around the works.
We are seeking individuals with knowledge of the marine and/or estuarine environment from a physical or ecological sciences background. You will have an understanding of UK environmental legislation and, ideally, experience of licence consents and conditions.
You will be part of a team supporting our work in management of the marine and waters edge environment with opportunities to develop your career within this diverse and vibrant company.
You will have the minimum of a first degree and around two years relevant work experience (this may be from any sector such as regulation, consultancy, contracting, monitoring, voluntary etc). The position provides a positive opportunity for self-development.

Flamborough Head Management Group

Flamborough Head is one of England’s most important and spectacular wildlife sites and supports populations of seabirds, marine wildlife and botanical communities of international importance. A Management Plan has been prepared for Flamborough Head, which aims to ensure that human activities are managed in a manner that is compatible with the requirements of this internationally important wildlife site.
The Flamborough Head Management Plan is in the third year of a six-year implementation cycle. As part of its ongoing commitment to Flamborough Head, the Management Group wishes to employ a Project Officer to take forward its implementation at a local and strategic level. The successful candidate will work closely with the Flamborough Head Maritime Forum, The Flamborough Head Fisheries Liaison Group and other stakeholders to ensure that the public and other stakeholder bodies are able to participate in the management of Flamborough Head. They will also develop a more detailed education package for schools and universities, about Flamborough Head European marine site and will work to insure the long-term future of the plan by investigating options for funding.
An 18-month full time vacancy now exists for a dynamic and creative Project Officer to undertake this work. The post will be based with, and line managed by, the North Eastern Sea Fisheries Committee in Bridlington.
The successful candidates must be educated to degree level or possess equivalent relevant experience.
