Underwater Sound and Marine Life |
9th October 2006 Organised by The Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST) and the Interagency Committee for Marine Science and Technology (IACMST) Sponsored by Ultra Electronics and QinetiQ THE ISSUE Anthropogenic noise and its impact on the marine environment remains an issue of concern within the maritime community. There have been a number of meetings to look at the different aspects of this issue from the policy required to regulate the emission of sound through to the science required to minimise its impact on the marine environment. This co- sponsored meeting will aim to build on the IACMST report Underwater Sound and Marine Life published in 2006 by looking at exploring a number of the recommendations further so as to contribute to the ongoing developments in the areas of science and policy. THE PROGRAMME The conference programme will educate and inform, consisting of thought provoking plenary talks and periods of discussion. Selected speakers chosen for their expertise in specific areas will act as scene setters and will provide delegates with a balanced overview of the biological science involved, the physics involved (acoustics) and the over-arching applicable laws and policies. Alongside research and policy in the UK , the talks will also look at developments in regulation and science in the US and in Europe . A wrap up session at the end of the day will be used to synthesise the issues and ideas discussed. Following the wrap up session it is planned that a Forum, whose establishment was recommended by the IACMST report, will be launched by Prof Howard Dalton, Chairman of IACMST. REGISTRATION It is anticipated this will be
a highly popular event so an early expression of intention to attend is
advised. The cost of attending the meeting will be £25 (inclusive
of VAT at 17.5%) To read the IACMST report please visit http://www.marine.gov.uk FOR MORE INFORMATION TECHNICAL ENQUIRIES: |

Groundwater Protection: Policy and Practice
17 October 2006, London
A CIWEM Conference with the Environment Agency
Groundwater is an important and vulnerable
resource and we see its importance in our reliance on it for water supply. Groundwater
provides on average 35% of mains water rising to 70% in the south east and its
support of rivers, lakes, bogs and wetlands. It is, however, vulnerable as shown
by the recent drought, high profile pollution incidents, and diffuse pollution
problems. The Environment Agency will launch in the late summer two new publications
to highlight these issues and explain their approach to managing and protecting
groundwater:
The State of the Environment Report – Groundwater
Groundwater Protection: Policy and Practice (GP3) – a totally new 3rd edition
of the ‘Policy and Practice for the Protection of Groundwater'
The aims of this meeting are to publicise key issues with regard to the state
of groundwater and developing policies. Then to engage key stakeholders in a
consultation on the future direction of the Environment Agencies groundwater
policy. The objectives of this conference are to:
Explain and publicise the State of Groundwater and Groundwater Protection: Policy
and Practice documents;
Comment upon the consultation and the EA's proposals in order to help shape
EA policy and promote multi-agency action programmes;
Engage a wide range of stakeholders including planners, water supply professionals,
government officers, waste engineers, water engineers, hydro-geologists, consultants,
environmental NGOs and developers whose involvement is critical in the effective
implementation of policy and action plans
Capture the range of stakeholder comments.
To book please complete the attached booking form and send by email to bob.earll@coastms.co.uk

Coastnet Conference - Potential implications and challenges of recent and emerging European policy and directives such as the Maritime Policy and Maritime Strategy
8 November, Galway, Ireland
Aims of the Conference
The green paper regarding Maritime Policy for the EU ( http://ec.europa.eu/maritimeaffairs/policy_en.html ) sets out many critical challenges for the Commission and the EU Member States. The Lisbon Agenda (growth and Jobs) is clearly reflected in the references to innovation, knowledge and technology, competitiveness, skills and employment, clustering and so on. However, the Gothenburg agenda (sustainable development) also permeates the document, with references to environment, quality of life, environmental risk and more.
The challenges are great in bringing all these aspects together in a policy framework which truly reflects the principles of sustainable development. To what extent can the environment be enhanced, but also exploited for tourism for example? Can we increase the attractiveness of coastal areas at the same time as developing maritime industries? To what extent is environmental risk a threat to competitiveness?
These questions and more will be explored in this conference, delivered by CoastNet as part of the Interreg–funded Corepoint project. Conference outputs will be submitted to the EU as part of the response to the consultation on the Green Paper.
If you wish to submit and abstract for this conference please completed the form on the following page and return to: Theresa.redding@coastnet.org.uk
If your paper is accepted for presentation we will also require the full paper prior to the conference
