Topic Groups Introduction

During the Spring/Summer 2003 Pembrokeshire Coastal Forum held a series of 11 Topic Group meetings to identify the coastal issues people were concerned with. They were divided into different areas and covered a wide-range of subjects. Each meeting was chaired by a representative with expert knowledge of that particular field, and were attended by individuals and organisations with interests in those subjects. Since its outset, Pembrokeshire Coastal Forum has been gathering issues from a range of sources, including Coastal Surgeries, local newspapers, the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority Management Plan, and Environment Agency Wales Local Environmental Action Plans. These issues have formed the basis of discussion at the Topic Group meetings, where the issues were debated and elaborated on. The purpose was not to resolve them at this stage – simply to identify them. These will be further debated during a series of meetings over the winter of 2003/04. The Topic Group meetings meant Pembrokeshire Coastal Forum gathered a huge amount of information from all sectors of the community. This is currently being drafted into a STATE OF/ISSUES report on the Pembrokeshire coast, which will allow the Forum to focus on specific areas with a clear vision for the future. The information will also inform Pembrokeshire Coastal Forum's overall project – writing a strategy for the long-term sustainable development of the Pembrokeshire Coastal Zone. The meetings covered these topics. Agriculture and Rural Land Use. Marine Pollution and Water Quality. Marine Industry, Business and Commerce. Nature Conservation and Environment. Energy. Landscape and Cultural Heritage. Ports, Shipping and Transport. Tourism, Recreation and Access. Fisheries and Aquaculture. Coastal Protection and Flood Defence. Communities and Education.
