Ports, Shipping and
Transport
Pembrokeshire is strategically
located on the western edge of the UK mainland with clear water between
it and Ireland/South America.
The principal port of Pembrokeshire is that at Milford Haven. This is
a Trust Port, which also includes Pembroke Port at Pembroke Dock. Together
they comprise the largest Port in Wales, and the fifth largest in the
UK, handling around 10,000 vessel movements and more than 34 million
tonnes of cargo annually. The other principal Port is at Fihguard/Goodwick
on the north Pembrokeshire coast.
Pembrokeshire is highly dependent on the Welsh trunk road system. This
links St Clears, Haverfordwest and Fishguard (A40), St Clears, and Pembroke
Dock (A477), Haverfordwest and Milford Haven (A4076) and Fishguard and
Cardigan (A487).
The main line railway service extends only as far as Swansea. An “Alphaline”
service connects Swansea with Pembrokeshire via Carmarthen.
A few of the issues identified through topic group meetings on this
subject were:
• Perceptions of pollution risk and industrial image can deter
tourism.
• The illegal dumping of persistent rubbish/wastes from vessels
results in long term environmental impacts.
• There is poor public awareness of the value of the sector to
local communities.
• The rail service to, from and within Pembrokeshire is in need
of considerable improvement to reduce the perception of peripherality
and dependency on cars.
This Topic Group was chaired by Captain Mark Andrews from the Milford
Haven Port Authority. To download a full report in PDF format, including
