Climate Adaptation Toolkit for Coastal Communities’ joins global movement for ocean sustainability

Pembrokeshire Coastal Forum (PCF) is proud to announce that its Climate Adaptation Toolkit for Coastal Communities has been officially endorsed as a United Nations Ocean Decade Activity, recognising its contribution to the goals of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021–2030)

The Ocean Decade, coordinated by UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC), brings together global partners to generate and use ocean knowledge for sustainable development. Each endorsed project contributes to one or more of the Decade’s ten challenges, harnessing science, innovation and collaboration to build a healthier, more resilient relationship between people and the ocean.

The Climate Adaptation Toolkit for Coastal Communities is designed to help communities prepare for and respond to the realities of a changing coastline. Developed by Pembrokeshire Coastal Forum, the toolkit empowers local decision-makers, educators, and residents with accessible information, guidance, and learning materials to support practical adaptation at the coast.

Scheduled to run from December 2025 to March 2026, the project will use the suite of online learning resources, case studies, and engagement activities to build understanding of how climate change is affecting our coastlines – and what can be done to adapt.

“We’re honoured that the Climate Adaptation Toolkit has been recognised as part of the United Nations Ocean Decade,” said Jetske Germing, Managing Director of Pembrokeshire Coastal Forum. “This endorsement highlights the importance of collaboration and knowledge-sharing in tackling coastal challenges, and reflects our ongoing commitment to building resilient, sustainable coastal communities.”

The endorsement means the toolkit will be part of an international network of activities contributing to the UN Decade’s vision: ‘the science we need for the ocean we want.’

Pembrokeshire Coastal Forum’s involvement underscores Wales’ growing leadership in coastal sustainability, bringing together local expertise, innovative partnerships, and community engagement to deliver solutions that can be replicated in other coastal regions.

The Climate Adaptation Toolkit complements PCF’s broader programme of work focused on Marine Renewable Energy, Sustainable RecreationEducation, Skills & Engagement, and Water Quality & Land Use – all supporting the organisation’s vision of a sustainable coast and ocean for future generations.
