Community Action

On this page, you’ll find a variety of tools and resources designed to help communities create effective climate adaptation plans. Whether you are part of a community group, local organisation, or simply looking to get involved, this step-by-step process offers everything you need to take action.

How do you create an effective Climate Adaptation Plan?

The first step is to involve your community. This might take the form of meetings, events or innovative projects involving visioning, arts, and future workshops.

There are three key aspects to community action for climate adaptation:

  • Understanding Risks – Identify specific climate risks that may affect your area and its community. (See our Learn Section)
  • Options Assessment – Assess the options for mitigating and adapting to these risks. This stage involves speaking to a wide range of stakeholders and experts.
  • Taking Action – Taking adaptive measures to reduce the effects of climate change felt by you or your community.

Step 1 – Identify your stakeholders

Determine who should be involved in the planning process – community members, local leaders, environmental experts, and other relevant groups.

Stakeholder Engagement Handbook

Stakeholder Mapping

Step 2 - Educate and engage your community

PCF has developed a set of bilingual climate change, impacts and actions cards to support engagement with community groups and facilitate structured conversations about climate change in their local area. You can download each deck of cards and workshop guidance and view the whole collection of cards here.

Step 3 – Co-create a shared vision

Find tools to help you create a shared vision and develop collaborative approaches to climate adaptation.

Co-creation of meeting ground rules

Establish shared expectations and guidelines for meetings, creating an inclusive and respectful space where all voices are heard.

Participatory Mapping

Work together to map out local assets, risks, and areas of concern, helping the community visualise climate impacts, where they are likely to occur on a map of the local area, and what the priority areas are – and plan for adaptation.

Postcards from the future

An imaginative exercise where participants write postcards describing a future community that has successfully adapted to climate change, encouraging creative thinking about solutions.
